As was the case last year, selecting the theatre companies to be involved in Assemble Fest 2015 was tough. And we mean, like, really tough.
First off, we received three times as many applications as we had space for, which is fantastic in itself because it shows that Hull is teeming with creative and proactive theatremakers. Once we'd thoroughly read and reread these applications, we had to create a shortlist, which was mighty hard work as there were so many brilliant ideas. Then came the selection panel at Hull Truck Theatre, where we asked companies more in-depth questions, and finally the even greater task of deciding who will be commissioned.
Following a rigorous selection process, we can now reveal the theatre companies that will create and perform new work at Assemble Fest on Saturday 23rd May 2015:
Whilst all submissions included cracking concepts, we feel that the above companies presented particularly strong, passionate and structured proposals of how their pieces will work in specific types of spaces down Newland Avenue. Also in effect was a clear indication of variety and uniqueness, with each show having a very different character and appeal to the other five.
We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the six theatre companies that will make Assemble Fest 2015 a reality. We would also like to thank everyone who applied; having so many imaginative and spirited people get in touch makes us very proud to be a part of this forward-thinking city.
The Assemble Fest blog will now share weekly updates from the organisers, our team, the theatre companies and other groups involved in the festival. So until next week, TTFN!
