This year Bellow Theatre are taking the melodies to a whole new level.
We’ve had a really busy couple of weeks cementing all our ideas for Gobble. We’re all feeling like we’ve got to the heart of what we want to say now, and it’s a case of working out how we can physicalise this in the most exciting and vibrant way.
We’ve had a few sessions with our mentors this year, Little Bulb, and they’ve been invaluable in providing an outside eye on the material, helping us to be really playful in our use of physicality and music, and always questioning how, why, and when we are involving the audience.
This year we’ve gone even further in using music and poor Ellie has had her work cut out. In our last rehearsal she had to make three songs, saying: "I didn’t realise I’d signed up for a musical." We’ve got plenty of musical treats in the show now, including a song all about my favourite character, Calorie Karen.
On Saturday, we had a really exciting session sharing a snippet of our work so far with the other Assemble Fest companies and watching a sneak peek of what they’ve been up to. This gave us some feedback, which we’re really excited to incorporate into our intensive rehearsals going into the last week.
Really rehearsals so far have been a mixture of song, story, stress and snacks (of course), because if you’re making a show about food it’s only right you should eat a LOT of it, right?
