Q: What is Assemble Fest?
A: Assemble Fest is a theatre festival returning to Newland Avenue in Hull on Saturday 3rd June 2017, in conjunction with the local traders and theatre companies within the city.
Q: What will be happening on the day?
A: Each commissioned company will perform their new piece of work five times each throughout the day, within their assigned venue. As well as these performances there will be additional activity, such as visual arts, music and drop-in sessions open to anyone wishing to participate.
Q: Who can apply for a commission?
A: Assemble Fest is open to any practising theatre company that is based in Hull and the East Riding, and shows a long-term commitment to producing work in the city. The company must have previous production experience, or at least have one other project outlined for 2016 other than Assemble Fest. All those involved must be over 18, and the company will need a company bank account.
Q: What if I'm a solo artist?
A: We acknowledge that there are many individual artists - be they directors, writers or performers - already working in the city. If you have an idea for the festival, we strongly encourage your application. However, we would expect you to partner with a pre-established theatre company in order to deliver the activity.
Q: What do I receive if I get through?
A: Each company will receive a tailored commission to produce their piece of work. Additionally, you will be paired with a suitable venue on Newland Avenue for the festival as well as an industry-leading mentor where appropriate, receive in-kind support such as marketing advice, props and technical equipment, free attendance at our development workshops being led by various industry experts, and ultimately 50% of your box office takings.
Q: Who are the mentors, and what will they be doing?
A: We are currently gathering a list of potential mentors to pair with the successful applicants. This will be done in consultation with the companies, as we assess which area would be most useful for you to receive guidance in, e.g. directors, writers, producers. These mentors will be available for one day of your rehearsal process, as well as available for the festival itself. How you work together will be up to the parties involved.
Q: How will ticketing work?
A: Tickets will go on sale at the beginning of April. Prices will be the same for all companies, and set by the festival organisers. There will be a discount for pre-booked tickets, so make sure your friends snap them up early.
Q: Do we have to advertise our own shows?
A: In order to co-ordinate our output, Assemble Fest will be responsible for all print marketing for the festival. However, we do expect each commissioned company to push their own productions through other channels, such as social media.
Q: Who is responsible for all the legal stuff?
A: Assemble Fest will be handling all public liability and performance licenses for the event. If you have any specific enquiries on this matter, please do get in touch with the Festival Producer: firstname.lastname@example.org
